Today, we offer a new series in our Directors Spotlight interview project. We are calling it our “Legends” series. Our first ”Legends” interview is with Mr. Sam Rhinesmith, retired Director of Bands at North Central HS. Sam has also enjoyed a second career with the New Horizons Band of Indianapolis. We hope you enjoy this edition of the Director Spotlight.

Great interview Sam and Tim. Sam was my Todd’s band director and Todd loved playing that trumpet at North Central. When my Todd died Sam was at his Celebration of Life and that meant so much to me. Sam, you have made a tremendous mark on the music in Washington Township.
Mr Rhinesmith to music to my brother and sister ahead of me in school. I had a different band teacher, and decided to quit band my senior year. When he heard this, he offered my a seat in the jazz band. It was an honor I probably didn’t deserve, but rather an act of inclusion, that resonates 28 years later. I have spent many years playing music, but it would be hard for me to think of an experience that outweighs that year in jazz band under the direction of the legend, Mr. Sam Rhinesmith.
Our city is far greater for having Sam Rhinesmith set the tone for MUSIC. Knowing him has humbled me. He is the greatest of the great.

Enjoyed seeing my NCHS band director here very much, and hearing how he continues to enjoy music and sharing it. I suspect more of his “kids” stuck with music than he knows (though this tuba player wasn’t one of them) at least in part because he taught us to appreciate and enjoy it. Thank you, sir, from your distant but not forgotten past.
